Exploring Utah History: A Must-Visit Museum Near Salt Lake City and Willard Peak Campground

If you’re near Salt Lake City—or even coming from Willard Peak Campground in Willard, Utah—this museum is absolutely worth the drive. We made the trip and were genuinely impressed. The displays in the museum are well-curated, informative, and visually engaging, offering a deep dive into the history and significance of the area.

One of the highlights was seeing the two replica locomotives—these were incredibly detailed and impressive, making the history come alive for both adults and kids. The craftsmanship and care put into these replicas show the dedication to preserving this part of our nation’s heritage.

There is also a National Park Service app available for the museum, which is a helpful guide—but it could use an update, especially regarding current times and events. Despite this, the experience is well worth it. Whether you’re a local or visiting from out of town, plan a few hours to explore, learn, and enjoy the exhibits. It’s a fantastic way to combine a little history, education, and fun in one trip.

Perfect for families, history buffs, or anyone looking for a meaningful day trip!

This site is definitely in the middle of nowhere, but it’s well worth the visit. The Rangers do an amazing job providing context, sharing stories, and highlighting the most important parts of the location’s history. Their passion and knowledge make the experience engaging and educational, turning a remote spot into a memorable adventure. Perfect for history buffs or anyone looking to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations!

We love remote landmarks, and visiting Golden Spike off-season in the cold didn’t slow us down—the drive was 10000% AWESOME! Entry was $20 at 6200 N 22300 W, Corinne, Utah. Don’t miss the NASA Lawn Museum nearby—it’s pretty amazing too. And for the record, Golden Spike is NOT an oversized toothpick, just saying 😉.
